Summertime, and the living is (not) easy... Jul. 10th, 2009 @ 05:01 pm

Oh, how I miss the carefree days of my youth when summer meant checking out mountains of library books and spending every waking moment reading by/in a pool! It occurs to me that I haven't had a proper summer vacation since I was in primary school. Every year after that I ended up working, volunteering, interning, or suffering through some kind of camp. Sadly this year is no exception; I'm all about the work, work, work, Family Medical Issues, and just for a change, more work. Not so much with the fun.

It's definitely summer, though. It hasn't rained since May, and it's been at least 100 degrees every day for a month. It's the kind of heat that saps your energy even when you're standing still, the kind that means I get dehydrated just walking from my office to my car. And yeah, I've lived here my whole life and we've had droughts and really bad heat spells before, but I honestly can't remember another one this severe. Global warming is happening, kids, and it SUCKS.

Luckily there are a few things going on that help me cling to my last shred of sanity. For instance:

~The Chelsea boys are back in training! They all look very tan and happy, of course, and in two weeks I'll be able to judge their fitness in person during the summer tour. \o/ Also, not that this is news to anyone, Big Pete is love. ♥

~Season 2 of Leverage finally starts on Wednesday! Dysfunctional family dynamics, hilarious techno-geekery, Christian Kane being badass, and legally sketchy shenanigans FTW!

~The Star Trek reboot. When I was growing up Picard was captain of the Enterprise, and though I loved Data and thought Worf was a total BAMF (and also hot) I didn't really watch the series regularly. I did see most of the movies, and I remember really liking The Voyage Home as a kid ('They are not the hell your whales!'), but I was never what you would call a devoted fan. So I was actually quite shocked to find myself enjoying the reboot enough to go see it several times and to waste way more time than I should laughing at [info]ontd_startrek. I'm not gonna lie, a big part of the appeal is the fact that Karl Urban is always extremely relevant to my interests. Karl Urban as Bones with pitch-perfect sweary rants and crazy eyebrow action, wearing pretty pretty science blues and trekking around pretty pretty planets and nebulas, is basically my idea of the BEST THING EVER. The added snark factor (Bitchy Spock FTW!) and clever characterizations for the rest of the crew were just fun bonuses. Okay, Kirk is still kind of a douche, but in an endearing way. It helps that Chris Pine doesn't...pause...between...each...word...like Shatner did. ;P

Anyway, that's the story of my summer so far. How's it going for the rest of you? I know at least some of y'all have that thing called 'a life' that I've heard so much about but never experienced...
